The 1980s were a time of the great conservation controversies, perhaps because conservation was coming of age and beginning to challenge the accepted order. Such controversies included the number of SSSIs, the impact of SSSIs on landowners, Flow Country tree planting, Duich Moss geese, expansion of downhill skiing facilities, the Morrich Mor pipeline, MoD use of land, low flying, fishfarming ...
I felt at the time that the various sectors did not understand where the other side was coming from and were not talking to each other. Additionally, each sector was only talking to itself: for example, the farming press seemed only to target farmers, with jargon almost impenetrable to outsiders.
Hence SCENES was set up to aid communication between the various sectors.
The SCENES archive is an excellent place to see how the issues have changed over the past three decades, from the early issues mentioned above, to new ones which have arisen since then such as windfarms, Marine Protected Areas and rewilding.
